Classically trained as a dancer and working as an instructor at a studio in Chicago, little did Judi Sheppard Missett know that when she changed her classes to teach dance as a form of exercise that she was creating an entire new way to get people moving. Judi created Jazzercise in 1969 when she realized that many of the students who attended her dance classes had no ambition of becoming a professional dancer and were only there to get a workout.


Judi is the original fitness 'mompreneur;' all she wanted to do was to provide a fun, easy-to-access way to exercise. As the popularity of dance aerobics grew, she created a franchise model that allowed thousands of women to run their own business and established Jazzercise one of the most iconic brands in fitness. On this special Mother's Day 2020 edition of All About Fitness, Judi Sheppard Missett shares her story as a ground-breaking founder of the modern fitness industry. The category of dance aerobics, the 'boutique' fitness studio concept and the methods for educating group fitness instructors were all pioneered by Judi and her team at Jazzercise; this is a fascinating discussion with one of the true legends of fitness.
