Exercise is physical stress applied to the body. Muscles become stronger after the workout, not during it, therefore exercise can be most effective when the body is given the appropriate amount of time to rest and recover between workouts. Periodization is a system of designing exercise programs that alternates the intensity and volume of exercise to allow for optimal periods of recovery (and adaptation).
