Booze. Drugs. Gambling. Sex. Exercise. Each of these activities can release serotonin and dopamine, the chemicals responsible for lighting up the pleasure centers of the brain. It is well know that the first four activities can cause addiction, but what about exercise?

This important episode of All About Fitness features a discussion with Katherine (Katie) Schreiber, a reporter and former editor for Psychology Today who co-authored the book: The Truth About Exercise Addiction: Understanding the Dark Side of Thinspiration. As someone who has worked in health clubs for twenty years, I have known numerous people, both men and women, who have struggled with this serious issue. On this episode Katie and I discuss addiction, what qualifies as being addicted to exercise and the steps to take if one feels that he or she may be an exercise addict.
